It’s hard to think of a better choice for a UK walking holiday than Devon and Cornwall. This southwest corner of Great Britain is a paradise for walkers of all abilities and interests. Stay close to Clawford Lakes and discover Devon thatch villages and Cornish harbour towns, National Parks and nature reserves, forests and lakes. Hit the South West Coast Path – the UK’s longest National Trail – for the tang of the sea air, views across the ocean and some rewarding walking. Explore Exmoor and Dartmoor, where rocky outcrops and open spaces offer hiking challenges and meditative moments in equal measure. All this from your base at Clawford Lakes, where after a long day’s walking, you can relax over drinks in the Apple and Grape or sink into the soothing warmth of your own lakeside hot tub.
Your walking holiday doesn’t have to involve much more than gently meandering around our 98-acre estate at Clawford Lakes or discovering the local Claw Valley country trails and picture-postcard Devon villages. The calm waters of the lakes are bordered by nature and offer an escape from the hubbub of a busy life, while nearby there are woodlands, nature reserves and waterways to explore. You’ll be pleased to hear we’re dog-friendly too – it would be just wrong to go on a walking holiday without the dog! Stay in an apartment or a waterside lodge, try the best glamping in Devon in a Luxury Cocoon, exclusive in the UK to Clawford Lakes,  or stay in a floating lodge or a cosy Lake Pod.  With such a comfortable base, you might find the walking part of your holiday is just a small part of a relaxing break, especially once you discover the lakeside Spa and Pool.
If you’ve brought your hiking boots, it’s time to push the boundaries and discover Devon. Take the South West Coast Path north-eastwards from Welcombe Mouth around the Hartland Peninsula to enjoy spectacular cliffs and rock formations, river crossings and waterfalls and the much-photographed fishing village of Clovelly. Further round are traditional seaside towns with sandy beaches and cafes to stop for a Devon cream tea. Inland Devon is often overlooked but do put it into your walking itinerary. Dartmoor, a short drive away, has lots of circular walks to enjoy the tors and the moorland that make up this bleakly beautiful landscape. Even closer to Clawford Lakes is Exmoor, where you might spot some of the famous Exmoor ponies as you climb Dunkery Beacon.
Cornwall offers one of the best locations for walking breaks in the UK. With 300 miles of continuous coastline covered by the South West Coast Path, you can choose a different section every day. Our closest stretch takes in the bustling Cornish seaside town of Bude and the atmospheric ruins of Tintagel Castle, steeped in the legend of King Arthur. Looking inland, Bodmin Moor is just 30 minutes’ drive away and here the circular walks are full of surprises such as bluebell woods, Celtic churchyards and prehistoric stone circles. If you are prepared to travel a little further to begin your walk, you can explore Poldark Country, taking in the iconic tin mine ruins of Botallack and the thrilling shipwreck-and-smuggler coastline of the North Cornwall Coast.
